Supporting the big-screen experience in Scotland

People everywhere enjoy going to the cinema. In cities and larger towns there is usually a choice of cinemas and films. But it’s not quite so easy to locate big-screen entertainment in many less populous areas of Scotland. Only 3 per cent of UK cinemas are located in rural areas and many mid-size coastal towns have lost their cinemas.

Regional Screen Scotland has been set up by Scottish Screen and HI~Arts to focus on developing cinemagoing opportunities in these smaller, less-well-provided communities.

The role of the new organisation is to act as a development agency, respond to requests for information, provide consultancy where necessary, and to work with national and local agencies to create high quality cinemagoing facilities and organisations including local film festivals, film societies and community cinemas, and new full-time digital cinemas.
