3D digital

Monsters and Aliens, Coraline, UP, A Christmas Carol, Avatar, Alice in Wonderland, Toy Story 3 - the list is growing fast. A new 3D film will be released on average every 2 weeks during 2010. For most cinema operators 3D is a "must have". Since January, audiences have enthusiastically welcomed Screen Machine's 3D digital screenings of Avatar and Alice in Wonderland.

Cinema operators and equipment suppliers gathered in London's Apollo Piccadilly Circus cinema in February to compare the five alternative 3D systems and to hear from cinema operators about their own experiences with the equipment and the spectacles. All five systems work well and it was clearly pointed out by the speakers that the choice is highly dependent on the individual circumstances of each cinema. (In Screen Machine we have installed the Xpand system with reusable spectacles. The same system is used at the National Film Theatre in London and was used for the World Premier of UP at last year's Cannes Film Festival.)

If your cinema is considering installing a 3D system it is important that you investigate the options in detail, especially the 5-year cost of ownership and the practical aspects of managing the spectacles. If you would like information on the various options please use the form on this page to contact Ron Inglis at Regional Screen Scotland.

The March 2010 issue of Cinema Technology (www.cinematechnologymagazine.com) contains the first part of a detailed article on 3D cinema systems. The second part will be published in June and will compare the various system options.
